Workers taking break at summer

Midday break for outdoor workers to begin on June 15 in UAE

The annual decision, issued by the UAE Minister of Human Resources and Emiratization, requires a worker not to stay in the workplace after 12:30 PM, prohibiting the resumption of work before 3:00 PM for three months from June 15th to September 16th. It enforces employers who hire workers to provide them with a shaded place to rest in during their breaks. Under the decision, daily working hours, for morning, evening or both shifts, are not to exceed eight hours. If a worker exceeds such eight hours within 24 hours, the extra time will be deemed overtime, for which the worker is to be paid, in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Law concerning the Regulation of Labour Relations.

"UAE's UMBRELLA" TO PROTECT WORKERS FROM DEADLY SUN RAYS

Use Sunscreen   Wearing sunscreen is a vital part of protecting construction workers from UV rays. Select a broad-spectrum sunscreen that offers protection from both UVB and UVA radiation with a high SPF, which measures the amount of protection from UVB radiation. Don   t forget about your face, neck, ears, hands, and lips.

Prevent Dehydration... Lack of water can cause you to experience periods of fatigue and low energy as your body tries to function without enough water. One of the first major reactions the human body has to high temperatures is sweating, which means that it   s losing fluids that must be replaced. It   s important for employers to ensure that their employees have sufficient access to plentiful water, to prevent illness by dehydration.

Shades...Along with providing drinking water, employers should make sure to provide shaded areas for breaks. Major outdoor activities should be reduced in hot weather, especially between the hottest hours of the day and allow staffs to take regular breaks.

Heat exhaustion is the bodys response to the loss of water and salt. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include the following:

  • Excessive sweating
  • Dizziness
  • Clammy skin
  • Muscle cramps
  • Flushed complexion
  • Weakness and fatigue
